Picture a line drawn through everything there is. On one side: prayer, the soul, whatever a person believes lasts forever. On the other side: money, work, clothes, dinner, what the neighbours think. Worldly points steadily at that second half — the things of this world. Every use grows out of that one gesture. The matters themselves are worldly concerns. All the things you own are your worldly goods. And a person who has spent a long time on that side of the line, and learned how it runs, is worldly too.

Old English woruldlīċ, literally world + -ly, meaning belonging to the world, earthly, secular. The modern word still does exactly that job.
