Picture drawing a line down the middle of a person: on one side the body and everything you can touch — food, money, a house; on the other side what goes on inside — meaning, peace, what a life is for. Spiritual points at that second side. Sometimes that inner side is organised by a religion, sometimes it is not, and English lets the word cover both.
