Picture a cloth going over the same patch of wood or leather, again and again, until the bumps are gone and the surface throws the light back at you. Two things are in that picture at once: somebody worked on it, and the roughness is no longer there. Every use of polished keeps both halves, whether the surface is a floor, a performance, or the way a person handles a room.
