Picture two places a thing can live: on paper, and out in the world where it has to actually work. Practical always points at the second place. Once you are standing in that second place, the questions that matter change — does it work, is it easy to use, can this person handle a real problem, what happens in effect rather than on paper. Every sense of practical is one of those questions.

可以想成一件事有兩個地方可以待：一個是紙上，一個是真的拿出來做的現場。practical 永遠指著後面那個。一旦站到現場，會問的問題就變了——這行得通嗎？好不好用？這個人碰到真狀況撐得住嗎？實際的結果是什麼（不管紙上怎麼寫）？practical 的每一個意思，都是這些問題裡的一個。
