Picture one person doing something entirely on their own — nobody else helping, nobody else on stage, no group around them. Just one. 'Solo' is that single-person quality: whatever the activity is — flying a plane, playing music, running a business — it's carried out alone. The word can describe the act (solo flight), name the thing done alone (a guitar solo), or be the doing itself (to solo). Underneath them all sits the same picture: one, and only one.

From Italian 'solo', meaning 'alone', which traces back to Latin 'solus' (alone, sole). The word entered English first as a musical term — a passage for one performer — and then spread to flying and other activities done alone.
