Alone, with nobody else with it - used right before a noun to describe one person or thing by itself, often sounding a little sad, brave, or dramatic. 'A lone wolf' is an animal (or a person) who likes being alone rather than in a group. 'A lone gunman' means just one attacker, with no one helping him. It sounds more literary than plain 'alone' or 'one.'

組成'Lone' actually came FROM the word 'alone' - people slowly dropped the 'a-' at the front over a long time. So 'lone' is really a shortened piece of 'alone,' not the other way around.
