You can picture attempt as reaching out to do something hard, with no promise it will work — you put in the effort and take your shot, win or lose. The whole word turns on that one moment of 'trying for it': the try itself (as a thing or as an action), the special try aimed at killing someone, and the saying that someone made no try at all.
