Picture someone putting forward a price out loud, hoping to win something — a hand up at an auction, a sealed envelope for a contract. A bid is an offer you announce in a contest where others are offering too; from that 'put forward to try to win' picture grow the noun (the offer, the card-game call) and the verb (to make that offer).

This bid descends from Old English beodan 'to offer, proclaim, announce'. The thread 'put forward / announce to others' explains the auction price, the contract tender, the card-game call — and, stretched, an attempt to get something.

A different, older bid: to address words to someone — to say a greeting or farewell to them, or, more strongly, to tell them to do something. Picture formally directing words at a person: 'I bid you good morning', 'she bade them leave'. The thread is speaking words AT someone, whether or commanding.

From the word’s history

This bid comes from Old English biddan 'to ask, entreat, command' (its old past tense 'bade' survives here). It is a separate word from the auction 'bid' (Old English beodan, to offer); the two only later fell together in spelling. So 'bid farewell' and 'bid a price' are historically two different verbs.
