Picture a small, marked-out patch of ground — its edges , its shape laid out on the earth. From 'a piece of ground you have plotted out' grow two directions: physically marking points and lines on a map or chart, and figuratively laying out a hidden scheme or the laid-out shape of a story. The common thread is something carefully MARKED OUT and arranged.
