Picture something standing on its own feet: no cable running out of it, no frame holding it up, no bigger roof over it. Everything it needs is already inside. Take away what is around it and it still stands and still works. That one picture carries both uses.
standalone 可以想成一個東西自己站著：旁邊沒有線、沒有支架，上面也沒有更大的屋頂罩著。它要用的東西都在自己身上。把周圍的一切拿掉，它照樣立著，也照樣能動。這個畫面可以一路帶著走：一台不連網路也能跑的電腦是這樣，一間不掛在任何集團底下的公司也是這樣。差別只在「旁邊的東西」是什麼——一邊是網路和別台機器，一邊是母公司和連鎖體系。
