If you do something single-handed, you do it alone, with nobody helping. We also say a single-handed voyage when one person sails a boat with no crew. As an adjective it sits before a noun: a single-handed effort, a single-handed crossing. Though actually, the same spelling can mean “with only one hand,” like a single-handed catch in sport, so listen for the situation. When you want to say how someone did a big job, English often prefers the adverb single-handedly.
