A useful way to picture it: things have been put in place — laid out in a particular arrangement — and that arrangement is now the state they are in. Whether it is furniture in a room, troops on a field, or the tendencies inside a person, the picture is the same: this is how it has been set up, and so this is how it will behave.

From Latin dispositiō "arrangement, orderly placing", from dispōnō "to place here and there, arrange" (dis- "apart" + pōnō "to put"). The literal sense is simply "the way things have been put apart into their places".
