What makes this person recognisably this person — the pattern in how they think, feel and treat others, the thing that stays the same across different days. From there the word moves outward: when that pattern is strong enough to be felt from across a room it becomes charm, or a person who stands out, or someone the public knows; and a place with a distinct feel is said to have it too.
