You can think of make-up as the answer to one question: what was this put together out of? Take the thing apart in your mind and look at the pieces — the people in a team, the qualities in a person, the layers on a face. The noun comes straight from the verb make up, so the sense of building something out of parts is still inside it. And if a piece is missing, putting that piece back is also make up, which is why a missed test gets a make-up.

make-up 可以想成在回答一個問題：這個東西是由什麼湊起來的。把它在腦中拆開，看看裡面有哪幾塊。可能是隊伍裡的那些人，可能是一個人身上的那些特質，也可能是臉上一層一層的東西。這個名詞直接從片語動詞 make up 來，所以「一塊一塊組起來」的感覺一直還在。反過來說，少了一塊、把那一塊補回去，也是 make up。所以缺考之後補的那一次，就叫 a make-up。
