Picture your name on a club's list. The word points at the fact of being on that list — you paid, you signed, you are in. From that one list you can also look at everyone else's names together, or simply count how many names there are.
可以想成：俱樂部的名冊上有你的名字。這個字指的就是「名字在上面」這件事——你報了名、繳了費，你屬於這裡。同一份名冊換個角度看，就長出另外兩個意思：把上面所有名字當成一群人，或是單純數一數上面有幾個名字。所以句子裡的 membership 到底指身分、指人、還是指數字，要看動詞和搭配的詞。
