You can picture two or more people pulling on the same rope in the same direction: the work is not one person's and then another's, it is done together. From that one picture the word goes two ways — outward to a person who is easy to pull with (willing, not making trouble), and inward to a business that is owned by everyone who works in it, so the pulling and the reward are both shared.
