Picture someone struggling with a heavy door, and a hand reaching in to hold it open. Helpful can be thought of as anything that makes the load lighter. The interesting part is what English lets carry that hand. It can be a thing — a map, a tip, a website — and then helpful means it actually made the job easier. Or it can be a person, and then helpful is not about one moment but about how they are: the sort of person whose hand is always ready before you ask. Same lightened load, once seen in the thing that lightened it, once seen in the person willing to lighten it.
