Picture a group of people and one thing in front of them — a decision, a memory, a field. Instead of the thing belonging to any single person, a line is drawn around the whole group and the thing sits inside that line. Collective can be thought of as the word that draws the line: it says 'count this as the group's, not as anyone's in particular'. Once the line is drawn, the group itself can also be named by it — which is how the adjective turns into a noun.

可以想成一群人，前面擺著一樣東西——一個決定、一段記憶、一塊田。這樣東西不歸其中任何一個人，而是有人在整群人外面畫了一個圈，把東西放在圈裡面。collective 可以想成就是那個畫圈的動作：它宣告「這要算在整群人頭上，不是算在誰身上」。而圈一旦畫出來，圈本身也可以拿這個字來稱呼——形容詞就是這樣變成名詞的。
