Picture things of the same kind brought into one place and held together as a single set. 'Collection' lives at two ends of that picture: the result — a set of things gathered together (a stamp collection) — and the act of gathering or them in (a rubbish collection, a collection for charity). Either way the core is: separate items pulled together into one group.

可以想成：把同一類的東西拉到一個地方、湊成一整組。collection 站在這個畫面的兩端——一端是「湊好的成果」（一整組蒐藏品，像郵票收藏），另一端是「把東西收攏、收取進來的動作」（收垃圾、為慈善募款）。不管哪一端，核心都是：原本分散的東西被聚到一起、成為一組。

From Latin 'colligere' = 'to gather together' (com- 'together' + legere 'to gather, pick'); the modern word still turns on bringing separate things into one group.
