You can hold the picture of two or more separate things being brought together into one — the joining itself, and the joined-up whole that results. From Latin 'unus' (one): many made into one.

可以想成把兩個以上原本分開的東西併成一個——可以指「併在一起」這個動作，也可以指併好之後成為一體的狀態。它的根是拉丁文 unus（一）：把多個變成一個。union 的各種用法，都是這個「合而為一」的畫面落在不同對象上。

From Latin 'unus' meaning 'one', via 'unio' (oneness, a joining into one). The core 'joining of separate things into one' runs through every sense.
