Picture several different things put together in one place — and the point of the word is that you can still tell they are different. A mixture is not one smooth new thing; it is a set of parts sitting together, sometimes stirred, sometimes just found side by side. From that you get everything from a bowl of cake batter to a crowd of very different people to what a science teacher means when she says salt and sand make a mixture, not a compound.
