Picture a line drawn on the wall marked 'enough for this job'. Something adequate reaches that line — enough in amount, or good enough in quality, for the purpose in hand — and reaching the line is all it does.

可以想成牆上畫著一條線，上面寫著「這件事需要到這裡」。adequate 描述的是剛好搆到那條線的狀態：錢夠不夠付、房間夠不夠大、說明講得夠不夠清楚，都是拿東西去比那條線。搆到了就成立，而它的重點也就停在「搆到了」，不再往上多說什麼。
