A hole where something ought to be. English lets you point at that hole from either side: from the person or thing that has it, or from the piece that is not there.

可以想成一個「本來該有、卻空著」的缺口。這個字的兩個用法，其實是站在缺口的兩邊看同一件事。一邊看的是「有缺口的那個人或那樣東西」，另一邊看的是「不見的那一塊」。英文只是換了主詞，缺口還是同一個。看懂這一點，兩個句型就不用分開背。
