You can picture a place where something ought to be — a shelf, a slot, a row of faces — and the place is empty. 'Missing' doesn't describe the thing itself; it describes the gap it left. Someone expected it there, looked, and found nothing. Every use keeps that shape: an expected spot, and nothing filling it.
