You can think of it as measuring something against what the job actually asks for, and finding it comes up short — the rope is not long enough to reach, the money not enough to cover. The word points at that gap between what's there and what's needed.
你把一樣東西拿去對照「這件事真正需要多少」，然後發現它構不到那條線。繩子不夠長、錢不夠付、人手不夠用——inadequate 講的不是東西本身好壞，而是它跟那個「需要」之間差了一截。所以同一份薪水在小鎮可能夠用，在大城市就 inadequate：標準永遠是那件事要求什麼。

From Latin adaequātus 'made equal to', from ad- 'to' + aequāre 'to make level'; with the negative in- it names something not brought level with what it must match.
adequate 來自拉丁文 adaequātus，意思是「被弄到跟…齊平」（ad-「向」+ aequus「平的、相等的」）；前面加上否定的 in-，字面就是「沒有被拉到齊平」。這正好解釋了現代的核心畫面：有一條「需要達到」的線，而這東西沒有跟它齊平。
