Middle English swathe comes from Old English swaþu, which meant a track or a trace, the mark left by something that has passed. That is the same mark a blade leaves in a field, which is why the modern word keeps pointing at the band that is left behind.

Old English had swaþul and sweþel for a wrap, band or bandage, and the verb comes from Old English *swaþian, close to besweþian, to swathe or swaddle. The cloth came first and the action is named after it, which is why even mist gets described as if it were being wound on in layers.
