    Feeling respect for someone or something, and showing that feeling in the way you speak and behave — for example by being polite, staying quiet, or not getting in their way.

    「respectful」講的是「心裡有尊敬，而且看得出來」——不只是心裡想，還會表現在說話和動作上：安靜、有禮貌、不打擾對方。可以想成 respect（尊敬）加上 -ful（滿滿的），整個人的樣子都帶著那份尊敬。它跟 polite 很接近，但 polite 偏「照社交場合該有的方式做」，respectful 多了一層「我把對方看得很重要」。兩個句型分工清楚：be respectful of + 事情（心願、習慣、規定），be respectful to／towards + 人。

Picture someone lowering their voice as they step into a room where something important is happening. They do not push forward, do not interrupt, do not take up more space than they need. The feeling inside is that this person or this thing matters — and the outside behaviour, the careful words and the careful movements, is that feeling made visible.

可以想成：一個人走進某個重要的場合時，自然把音量放低、腳步放慢，不搶話、不擋路、不佔多餘的空間。心裡有一份「這個人（或這件事）是重要的」的感覺，而說話的方式、身體的動作，就是把那份感覺做出來給人看見。respectful 講的正是這種「心裡有敬意，行為上也看得出來」的狀態。
