Picture a hand that reaches out, closes on something, and carries it off. Two things are always in the picture: the taking is by force, and what was taken does not stay where it was. That one movement is behind everything this word does. It can fall on treasure, on a person, on a , or on your own attention when something is too beautiful to look away from. The word feels heavy in English because most of its history is the dark side of that movement.

From the word’s history

Ravish came through Anglo-Norman and Old French ravir, to seize or to take away hastily, from Latin rapere. The same Latin verb lies behind rape. That is why the seizing picture sits under every branch, including the one about beauty.

ravish 經盎格魯諾曼語和古法文 ravir（抓住、匆匆帶走）而來，源頭是拉丁文 rapere；rape 也來自同一個字。這就是為什麼「抓走」的畫面在每一支用法底下都找得到，連講美的那一支也一樣。
