Picture sitting trapped while someone drones on and on about something dull — your attention drains away and you feel tired and flat. That draining feeling is the core: to bore is to drain the interest out of someone; a bore is the dull thing or person that does it.

This 'bore' is not really its own word — you can think of it as 'bear' wearing a past-tense coat. Whatever bear could do (carry, hold up, give birth to, put up with), 'bore' is that same action looked back on as already done.
