You can picture 'protect' as putting a cover in front of something so harm cannot reach it. The Latin root literally means 'to cover over' (pro- 'in front' + tegere 'to cover') — a roof over your head. Every sense is some version of standing a shield between a thing you value and the danger that could hurt it.

From Latin 'protegere' = pro- ('in front') + tegere ('to cover'), literally 'to cover in front'. The shielding image comes straight from this.
