You can picture 'produce' as bringing something forth into the world — pulling something out of a process so that it now exists where it didn't before. A factory, a plant, a writer, a cause: each runs through some work and out the front comes a finished thing. The noun 'produce' is simply that brought-forth thing itself (what the land brings out).

From Latin 'producere', from 'pro-' (forward) + 'ducere' (to lead) — literally 'to lead forward / bring forth'. The modern core 'bring something into existence' is the same image: leading a thing out to the front.
