    To act so that something does not happen, or so that a person is not able to do something.

    To act採取行動 so that使 something does not happen某件事不發生 or或 so that使 a person is not able to do something一個人無法做某件事。

You can picture prevent as in front of something before it can happen and holding it back — like putting your hand out to stop a door from slamming, or a fence that keeps the sheep from wandering onto the road. The key is the timing: you act first, so the thing never gets to take place at all.
