You can think of liking as the verb like packed up into something you can hold. Once it is a thing, you can have it, grow it, or lose it, and you can also hold it up against what is in front of you. That second move is where the rest of the word comes from: your liking becomes a quiet measure of what suits you. Every use of the word travels inside a fixed frame — a liking for, take a liking to, to your liking, too something for my liking — so the frame is really what a is learning here.

Wiktionary traces the noun to Old English līcung, meaning pleasing, pleasure or liking, formed from like plus -ing. So English packed the act of liking into a thing very early, which is why the word still behaves like something you have or develop.
