One way to picture it: something is put outside the door and the door is shut — after elimination, it is simply not in here any more.

把某個東西請出門外，然後門關上。elimination 講的不是「變少」或「變弱」，而是「這裡面已經沒有它了」——名單上刪掉、比賽裡出局、身體裡排掉，都是同一個動作：從一個範圍裡被拿出去，之後它就不在這個範圍裡了。

From Latin ēlīmināre, literally 'to put out of doors' — ē- (out) + līmen (threshold, doorway). The modern core image of putting something outside and closing the door is the original picture, almost unchanged.

拉丁文 ēlīmināre 的字面意思就是「趕出門外」：ē-（出去）＋ līmen（門檻）。līmen 這個字在英文裡還活著，就是 subliminal（閾下的，「在門檻之下」）的那個 limen。所以現在的「消除、淘汰、排出」全都還踩在同一個門檻上——把東西弄到門外去，它就不在屋裡了。
