Assassination is the act of murdering an important person. It names the event, not the person who did it: the assassin does the killing; the assassination is the killing. You hear it in news and history — “the assassination of…” — and it sounds very serious. Though actually, English also uses character assassination: a planned attack on someone’s name with rumours and ugly stories, not with a weapon. Same shape of a hit, different kind of harm.
