消化
You can think of it as the body quietly taking food apart inside you — bread stops being bread and becomes something your body can carry off and use. Not one action, but a slow process that keeps working after the meal is over.
東西吃下去之後，身體在裡面慢慢把它拆開。那塊麵包不再是麵包，被分解成身體能吸收、能帶著走的養分。重點不是「吃」那一口，而是吃完之後身體內部持續在進行的那段過程——你看不到，但它一直在動。

From Latin digerere "to carry apart, separate, dissolve" (dis- "apart" + gerere "to carry"), via Old French digestion.
來自拉丁文 digerere，本義是「把東西分開、搬開」（dis- 分開 + gerere 搬運）。所以 digestion 一開始講的就是「把整塊東西拆散、分送出去」這個動作，剛好對上身體把食物拆解、再把養分送到各處的畫面。
