Picture a handful of string that has itself into one lump. You hold it up, find a loose end, and work the knots open until every line lies separate again. That patient pulling-apart is what disentangle does, and it works the same way whatever is tangled: a kite string, a bird caught in a net, two facts nobody can tell apart any more, or a person wound into a situation they cannot easily leave.

The packet's etymology tree gives dis- + entangle, with entangle itself built on tangle. So the word is literally the undoing of a tangle, which is exactly the picture all four senses share.
