You can think of commit as 'to put yourself (or something of yours) all the way in, so there is no easy backing out'. Whether it is a promise, your loyalty, your money, your written words, or even a bad deed — once you commit, you have handed that thing over and become responsible for it. The act is done, your name is on it, and it counts.
