The gap where attention should have been. Care is what you add to an action to keep it safe and right — the second look, the steadier hand, the thought before you speak. This word names the state of that addition being absent. The action is complete; only the watching is missing. Whether that reads as damage, as ease, or as nerve depends on what was being watched.
