You can picture someone who notices what another person needs or feels, and then actually does something about it. The word describes that turned-toward-you quality — in a person, in the atmosphere of a place, or in a way of doing things. From there it also becomes the standard label for the jobs built entirely out of that: nursing, social work, looking after children or older people.
