    Negligent describes someone who fails to give the care or attention they are responsible for giving, so something goes wrong that could have been avoided. It's a slightly formal word, common in news reports and legal talk: a negligent driver, a negligent parent, a company that was negligent about safety. It's stronger and more serious-sounding than just 'careless'.
