You can picture neglect as a hand that does not reach out. The thing is right there in front of you — a child, a garden, a letter on the table — and you simply do not pick it up. Nothing violent happens; the damage comes from the absence of the hand.

From the word’s history

Latin neglegō is nec ("not") + legō ("to pick up, gather"), so the root sense is literally "not to pick up" — the modern meaning is still that unextended hand.

拉丁文 neglegō 由 nec（不）+ legō（撿起、拾取）組成，字面就是「不去撿起來」。這個字根和現代意思幾乎完全對得上：neglect 不是把東西弄壞，而是走過去、看見了、卻沒有彎腰把它撿起來。legō 這個字根你在 collect（一起撿起）、select（挑出來撿）裡也看得到，都是「撿」的動作；neglect 就是它的反面。
