To look at several tasks, problems or needs, decide which ones matter most, and put them in that order so the most important ones get dealt with first.
排優先順序
You can think of prioritize as lining a pile of things up into a queue. Whoever stands at the front gets dealt with first. The lining up is the action itself: you are deciding the order, not finishing the work. From that one picture you can look two ways, at how the whole queue is arranged, or at which single thing was pulled to the front.

Prioritize is priority plus -ize, literally to make something a priority. It is a recent word, recorded from 1967 in United States government language and spreading through the 1970s and 1980s.
prioritize 由 priority（優先的事）加上 -ize（使變成…）構成，字面上就是「把某件事變成優先」。資料記載它 1967 年才出現在美國官方用語裡，1970、80 年代才普及，所以它是個很新的字。
