Picture an open door with someone standing in it, glad that you came. That one picture holds the whole word. The gladness can sit on the person at the door, on the room waiting behind them, or on the things they arranged because they knew you were coming.

Wiktionary traces welcome to Old English wilcuma, built from the elements for will or pleasure and for a comer — a person whose arrival you are pleased about. Welcoming is that word plus -ing, so arrival has been inside it from the start.
維基詞典把 welcome 追到古英語 wilcuma，由「心之所願」加上「來的人」組成，字面接近「你來我很高興的那個人」。welcoming 就是這個字加上 -ing。所以「有人到了」這件事，從一開始就在字裡面，今天三個用法也都圍著抵達的那一刻打轉。
