A door opened wide to someone from outside — a place that takes a stranger in, gives them food and shelter, and lets them stay. The word can be pictured as the quality of being a place (or a person) where an outsider can arrive and survive comfortably.
From the word’s history
From Latin hospitare 'to receive as a guest', built on hospes, which meant both 'host' and 'guest' — the same word for the two people on either side of the door. The -able ending makes it 'able to receive a guest', which is still exactly what the modern word says.
