You can picture the thin shell of air wrapped all the way round the Earth: invisible, but you are inside it every second, and it touches you everywhere at once. English keeps that shape — a medium that surrounds you and that you cannot step outside of — for smaller and smaller spaces, and finally for the feeling in a room, which also surrounds everybody in it whether they name it or not.
