Picture a stamp pressing the same mark onto thing after thing: every object that takes that one mark belongs together. From that single image grow two branches that look unrelated but share a root — the 'mould / kind' branch (things stamped from the same pattern form a 'type', a group sharing features) and the 'printed letter' branch (the physical raised block that stamps a letter, and the keyboard action of stamping letters one by one).

Both branches trace to Greek 'typos' = a blow, an impression, the mark left by stamping. From 'the mark stamped' came English 'type' as 'a kind/class' (things of the same stamp) and 'type' as the metal block / printed letters that stamp a mark on paper.
