You can picture travel as 'covering ground from one place to another, especially a long way' — something moves across distance, leaving where it started and arriving somewhere else. It starts with people going far, then stretches to anything that moves over a span: a car, light, sound, even news passing along.

From Middle English travailen 'to make a journey', originally 'to toil, labour', from Old French travailler 'to work hard, suffer'. A journey once meant hard, wearisome effort — travel and travail share the same root.
