One way to hold 'thrill': a feeling that shoots through you, fast and sharp, the way a wave runs up your back when the roller coaster drops. It arrives all at once, it is pleasant, and part of the pleasure is that it is a little too much.

From the word’s history

'Thrill' comes from Middle English thirlen 'to pierce, bore through', from Old English thyrlian (from thyrel 'hole', related to thurh 'through'). By the late 14th century it meant to affect someone with a sudden penetration of emotion, and by the 1590s 'to give a shivering, exciting feeling'; the noun 'a sudden, penetrating, shivering, exciting feeling' dates from the 1670s.

thrill 早期的意思是「刺穿、鑽出一個洞」（中古英語 thirlen，源自古英語 thyrlian，來自 thyrel「洞」＋ thurh「穿過」）；十四世紀末開始用來指情緒突然穿透一個人，十六世紀末變成「讓人起雞皮疙瘩的興奮」，名詞在十七世紀後期定下來。知道這條線，就能理解為什麼 thrill 的興奮總是「穿過身體」的那種，而不是慢慢升起來的愉快。
