    thankful 講的不只是「謝謝」，而是「還好有…，不然就慘了」的那種鬆一口氣，所以它多半朝著事情的結果，不是朝著某個人：grateful 是對幫你的人（I'm grateful to you），thankful 是對事情的走向（I'm thankful it stopped raining）。三個句型：thankful for + 名詞、thankful that + 子句、thankful to + 動詞。字面可以想成 thank（謝）+ -ful（滿滿的），而那份謝意常常是壞事沒發生換來的。

A picture that fits: you look back at how something turned out, quietly see the worse version that almost happened, and feel relieved and glad that it did not. The feeling points at the outcome — at luck, or at whoever or whatever kept the bad version away.
